These breed is essentially native from the Canton du Valais and her extension area corresponds to the natural geographic bondaries with the Forest of Pfyn to the east and with the strangulation of the Rhone Valley downstream of Martigny. This area is characterized by the same culture all over. It corresponds exactly with the distribution of the Franco-Provincial language. This area is also characterized by a large husbandry of the alpine pastures with its common alpine domains, special cultivation of the territory and particular types of management.
Since 25 years, the breed is progressing in a very positive way in the upper part of Valais (Valley of Goms). Since a long time, it is also kept and bred in the Valle d'Aosta in Italy under the name of Castana Breed. Previous, the Hérens Breed has colonized the whole Vallée de Chamonix before almost disappearing from this landscape. But since more than 15 years, a breeding stock of some hundred animals is kept again in the Vallée de Chamonix in France.
In the year 2002 the breeding cooperative from the Canton de Vaud has join the Association as member.
