Hérens Breed cows have a vigorous and fighting temperament which leads to a ritual of dominance exacerbated. In springtime when the herds moved up to the alpine pastures, when they are grazing in summertime or when the cows are simply together, the Hérens animals fight in a natural way and this proves the dominant character traits of the breed.
These special characteristic traits provide the pretext for the cooperatives to organize fights every spring. More than a hundred of cows and heifers participate at these events which bring together more than hundred of animals divided into various categories, according to age and weight. After many games, one of the fighting cow is declared La Reine (the Queen) by the jury.
Such events are also organized with animals of the Castana Breed in the Valle d'Aosta and since few years an annual cow fight takes place in the Vallée de Chamonix.
The ability in combat is an integral part of the genetic heritage of the Hérens Breed and there is no doubt that its transmission is hereditary.
